Hiking Tours of North Moccasin Mountain Dinosaur Track Site

and South Fork Indian Canyon Pictographs

Date: Thursday, May 22, 2008

Time: 8am to 11am (dinosaur site)  11:30am to 2pm (pictograph site)

Location: Gathering area for the dinosaur track site will be on the south shoulder of the Yellowjacket Road (aka Sand Dunes Road), approximately 3.5 miles west of the entrance to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park visitor center.  The gathering area for the pictograph tour will be on the south side of Hancock Road, approximately 6 miles west of Hwy. 89, where the Sand Spring Road (aka Lamb Spring Road) intersects with the Hancock Road.

Description:

BLM staff will guide both tours.  Dr. Alan Titus, paleontologist for the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, will lead the dinosaur track site tour.  Limited vehicle space will be available for people unable to provide their own 4-wheel-drive access.  Car-pooling to the gathering area along Yellowjacket Road is highly encouraged.  The dinosaur track site itself is located approximately 2 miles south of the Yellowjacket Road gathering area.  Deep sand along the access road usually necessitates 4-wheel-drive capability.

To also join the pictograph tour, the site is located approximately 5 miles south of the Hancock Road gathering area.  Matt Zweifel, archeologist for the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, will lead the pictograph hike.  A lunch stop will be provided at the pictograph trailhead.  Participants will need to furnish their own food and beverage.  The hike to the pictograph panel is only about ¼-mile in length, but is extremely steep for a brief segment.  Parking space at the trailhead is limited, so car-pooling in 4-wheel-drive vehicles is once again highly encouraged.

Maps to both sites will be available at the BLM Kanab Field Office, 318 N 100 E, in Kanab prior to the day of the tours.

Interpretive Hike on Squaw Trail-Tom’s Canyon Trail Loop

Date: Friday, May 23, 2008

Time:  7:30am to 11:30am

Location: Gather in the parking lot of the BLM Kanab Field Office, 318 North 100 East, in Kanab.  Wear appropriate hiking clothing, good footwear, and provide your own water, snacks and sunscreen.

Description: The entire 6-mile loop, starting on the Squaw Trail and coming out along the Tom’s Canyon Trail is about a 3 to 4 hour hike.  A vehicle shuttle will be optional, for those participants wishing to shorten the hike to 4 miles by foregoing the 2-mile walk through town between the two trailheads.  To begin the hike, we will ascend the vermilion cliffs, which rise 800 feet above the north end of Kanab City. The upper section is in the Pinyon-Juniper forest, is sandy in spots, and there are several short but steep, rocky segments on both trails. Impressive and very scenic views abound on this hike.
