   Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument ~ www.ut.blm.gov/monument    

   Cat Stair Canyon Petroglyphs
   Date:  Saturday, May 19

   Time:  9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
   Location:  Kanab Visitor Center and Cat Stair Canyon

   Difficulty:  Easy
   Description:  A short presentation of rock art by GSENM archaeologist
   Marietta Eaton at the Kanab Visitor Center will prepare you for a visit
   to a prehistoric site at Cat Stair Canyon.  After a short hike, we will
   spend time documenting a pictograph site and talking about contemporary
   Native American and archaeologist perceptions of these enigmatic images.
   Bring water, lunch & writing implements.

 

    Wildlife Tracking
   Date: Tuesday, May 22

   Time: 10 a.m. to Noon
   Location: Meet at Devils Garden, 13 miles down Hole-in-the-Rock Road,
   east of Escalante.

   Difficulty: easy
   See the unseen as you track elusive wildlife, such as mountain lion and
   coyote at Devils Garden
with Ranger Larry Glickman.  Learn how to
   identify various animals based entirely on the tracks they leave behind.

    Utah's Emerging Window into the Late Cretaceous
   Date: Wednesday, May 23
   Time:  7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
   Location:  Kanab Visitor Center

   Description:  The last seven years have seen a renaissance in the
   Monument's Late Cretaceous macro-vertebrate paleontology. Numerous new
   species of dinosaurs and other larger vertebrates have been found
   leading scientists to some surprising conclusions about southern Utah 75
   million years ago. Find out from GSENM paleontologist Dr. Alan Titus
   about the Monument's role in dinosaur paleontology.

    Paleontology Lab Open House
   Date: Thursday, May 24
   Time:  2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
   Location:  GSENM Headquarters Laboratory

   Description:  GSENM paleontologist Dr. Alan Titus shares how finding and
   digging dinosaurs is less than half of the story.  You'll see how fossil
   bones are removed from their rocky tombs and brought back to life.

    Sharks Among the Sagebrush
   Date: Thursday, May 24
   Time: 9 to 10 a.m. lecture with optional field trip from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
   Place: Cannonville Visitor Center

   Difficulty: easy to moderate
   Hey kids!  Bring your parents along and join Ranger Dave on a trip into
   the Monument's geologic past.  Participate in activities and examine
   some of the evidence that speaks of a long-ago time when these lands
   knew oceans, sharks, and sea monsters!
   After the Visitor Center program, a field trip out to Grosvenor Arch is
   optional.  The optional field trip requires a high-clearance vehicle for
   some dirt-road-driving (kids will have to let their parents drive).
   Bring water, a hat, sunscreen and lunch.  Wear sturdy boots/shoes for
   some moderate hiking.  Field trip will be from 10:30 AM to approximately
   3 PM, travel time included.
   Geared towards kids 6-12, but open to kids of all ages!

    GPS Class
   Date: Friday, May 25
   Time:  6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
   Location:  Kanab Visitor Center

   Description:  Bring your GPS. Learn how get here, there and back again.
   A short presentation on how GPS works will be followed by a fun outside
   demonstration.

 

  Wild Condor!
  Date:  Friday, May 25
  Time:  7:30pm to 8:30pm
  Location Kanab Visitor Center
  Mike Small, former BLM wildlife biologist on the Arizona Strip delivers a powerful multimedia presentation
  on the California condor re-introduction effort in northern Arizona and southern Utah. Mike, who has been
  with the program since its inception, will portray this endangered species in fascinating detail. Even though
  it is a strict scavenger, the condor has a wingspan of over nine feet, making it the largest flying land bird
  in North America. Mike gives viewers tips on best sites for viewing condors in the local area.

    Coffee with a Ranger
   Date: Saturday, May 26
   Time: 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
   Place: Calf Creek Campground

   Plan your adventure for the day over a cup of coffee or hot chocolate
   with a ranger.

  for a backstage tour of our birds and wildlife department, with educational presentations by our Wildlife
